HERMES: FESTIVAL DES METIERS
Personally, my favourite image in this little picture tableau below is in the second row. The first image from the left. To me it says weapon of defence. To me it says spy bag. Don’t you think that there fine leather handle, resting in that metal thing on which handles rest whilst they’re being tightly sewn up looks like some kind of medieval bow and arrow contraption. Like something out of Game of Thrones. I get the feeling that Hermes handles have not been designed to be removable and act as bows or spears that can be thrown when danger strikes, but wouldn’t it be fabulous if they were? Imagine someone trying to mug you for your bag and as they’re pulling at it, you suddenly let go, handle in your hand, stab them in the toe with it and run off with your bag. The number of muggings in London would fall dramatically. They’ll be showing you how to craft an Hermes bag at the Saatchi Gallery from May 21st. Maybe if you ask nicely, they’ll go off topic and make a handle/spear.
